In the Chamber

It is light in my chamber,
This is because of the night star.
My mother will take a pail
And silently bring water.

My red flowers in the garden
Have completely faded.
The boat in the river shoal
Will completely decay soon.

The lacy shadow of willow
Slumbers on my wall.
It will be a busy day for me tomorrow:

I will water the flowers,
Ponder my fate
And make a new boat
Till the first night star...

It is light in my chamber,
This is because of the night star.
My mother will take a pail
And silently bring water.

Moon!

In the evening after the long day, I run
into you –
Your eyes, lips, hands, and
shoulders...
I know, this is a disease, but I cannot
overcome it,
And I will not feel better without you.
It is like a waiting room
Where the world again became lonely
without you...

Oh, what a nice moon is in the sky!
I wish I would go mad tomorrow
To have no need of thinking and
guessing
How long I should wait...

Not to wait is more difficult than to wait,
but you hardly understand me...
The seconds fall like drops.
The night that is so alike to the rain will
be over again,
And we will become like strangers.
The clock hands stopped at the five
minutes to the end...
Why don’t you want to come here?

Oh, what a nice moon is in the sky!
I wish I would go mad tomorrow
To have no need of thinking and
guessing
How long I should wait...

My Birdie

I believed to part with you
was not a problem
And I didn’t take our
meetings seriously.
This was just a passion
Everybody will tell you this,
And as regards love till death –
God forbid!

And when you told me:
‘We have different ways’,
I answered, smiling:
‘Fly, my birdie!’
I was probably out of my mind
And didn’t realize what I was losing at
that moment,
Please forgive me, forgive me.

Without your love, I am lost
Fly to me soon, my birdie!

Since we parted
I do not eat.  I do not sleep.
But just continuously repeat
That ‘I love you’.
Every day I live now
is like a nightmare,
I beg you to forget all
and come to me.

I will forget your words
‘We have different ways’,
You will forget I said
‘Fly, my birdie!’.
We will forget these phrases,
And happiness will immediately return.
Please forgive me, forgive me!

Without your love, I am lost
Fly to me soon quickly my birdie!
Without your love, I am lost
Fly to me quickly, my birdie!

The Rare Bird

My friends gifted me a royal bird,
A rare bird that one can't help
being proud of.
I loved her with all my heart; I
accepted and understood her.
I fed her fragrant honey from the
palm of my hand.

A rare bird lived in my home,
A rare bird with two golden wings.

I released her so she would not
be sad at night
And hit her shoulders against the
sharp lattice rods.
With a song she flew into the
snow-white blizzard,
Only a golden ring remained for
remembrance.

A rare bird lived in my home,
A rare bird with two golden wings.

Where are you now, and at what
heights do you fly?
Rare bird, have you found
someone else?
Have you again gotten into
strange hands?
Or are you free, or, more exactly,
lonely again?

A rare bird lived in my home,
A rare bird with two golden wings.

The Leaves Have Flown Away

The poplar leaves have flown away –
The inevitable situation repeated in
the world...
Don’t regret the leaves,
Don’t regret,
But regret my love,
But regret my love
And tenderness...
And tenderness...

Let the tree stay bare,
Don’t curse the noisy snowstorms.
Is it anybody’s guilt
That the leaves have flown from the
trees?..

The poplar leaves have flown away...
The leaves have flown away...

The Scarlet Dawn

The scarlet dawn, the scarlet dawn,
the scarlet lips,
And the turquoise of the heavens in
your eyes.
My long-waited love,
Please don’t leave me, don’t leave me,
don’t leave me...
My long-waited love,
Please don’t leave me, don’t leave me,
don’t leave me...

When you lift your head,
Your hair curl like a ripe ear over your
shoulders.
With your tenderness and your voice,
Please don’t leave me, don’t leave me,
don’t leave me...
With your tenderness and your voice,
Please don’t leave me, don’t leave me,
don’t leave me...

You have become the most beautiful
and dearest to me.
Let even a droplet of your tenderness
not cool down.
Please don’t leave me, don’t leave me,
don’t leave me
Even in hundreds and thousands of
years...

Strange Feeling

The wind was sobbing like a child
Round the corner of the darkened
house.
In the broad yard,
Straw was flowing with rustle over the
ground...

You and I didn’t play at love,
We didn’t know this art.
We simply kissed being impelled by a
strange feeling
Near a stack of logs.

Is it possible to part easily
When it is so lonely at the house
Where there are only a crying child
wind,
A stack of logs, and straw?

You and I didn’t play at love,
We didn’t know this art.
We simply kissed being impelled by a
strange feeling
Near a stack of logs.

Potemkin Staircase

The rumor about this southern
city has been spread not without
reason -
Such cities are rare in the world!
When walking along the
Deribasovskaya Sreet and sunny
boulevards,
I have nod desire to leave this city.

The last hydrofoil boat has sailed
away from the shore,
The sea is covered with rest and
paradise.
The Potemkin Staircase is the
eighth miracle of the world
But maybe even the ninth one – I
cannot claim this.

To walk along this staircase is not
easy,
I am counting step by step as
usually,
But my thoughts are distracted, I
lose count of the steps,
And they resemble my flying years.

The last hydrofoil boat has sailed
away from the shore,
The sea is covered with rest and
paradise.
The Potemkin Staircase is the
eighth miracle of the world
But maybe even the ninth one – I
cannot claim this.

I am persistently climbing the
miraculous staircase
In this effulgent evening.
Let somebody traditionally call
Odessa a mother,
But I want to call it a sister.

The last hydrofoil boat has sailed
away from the shore,
The sea is covered with rest and
paradise.
The Potemkin Staircase is the
eighth miracle of the world
But maybe even the ninth one – I
cannot claim this.
